Top 10 Risks in the Ethical AI Development in Human Services

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into human services offers transformative potential, from streamlining administrative processes to providing personalized care. I spend most of my time highlighting the potential of AI to transform social impact work. However, at this point we know that the development and deployment of these technologies must be navigated carefully to avoid ethical pitfalls. While a lot of ink has been spilled about ethical and responsible AI concerns and practices, I think its worthwhile to provide the top ten risks to prioritized in ethical AI development in human services, highlighting the challenges and considerations necessary to foster trustworthy and beneficial AI systems.

1. Bias and Discrimination

AI systems can perpetuate or even exacerbate existing biases if they are trained on skewed or non-representative data sets. This risk is particularly concerning in human services, where decisions impact critical aspects of people's lives, such as welfare, healthcare, and education.  This risk is not just about the AI being providing incorrect or biased answers, but AI can be trained to potentially steer clients away from receiving the services or public benefits for which they are eligibile.  Similar to how communities were redlined in housing discrimination, AI through tone and its training can be built, even unwittingly, to discriminate.

2. Lack of Transparency

AI algorithms can be highly complex and opaque, making it difficult for users and stakeholders to understand how decisions are made. This "black box" nature of AI can lead to mistrust and can complicate accountability in cases where decisions need to be reviewed or contested.

3. Privacy Concerns

Human services often deal with sensitive personal information. AI systems that collect, store, or analyze this data must be designed to ensure the utmost confidentiality and compliance with data protection laws, or they risk violating client privacy.
