Championing Inclusive AI: Reflections from the Global Task Force

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping society at a breathtaking pace. As algorithms increasingly mediate access to jobs, housing, education, and healthcare, the stakes for equitable and inclusive AI could not be higher. That’s why I’m proud to support and contribute to the work of the Partnership on AI’s Global Task Force on Inclusive AI—a pioneering coalition of experts committed to ensuring AI systems work for all people, especially those historically underserved or marginalized.

The Task Force recently released a groundbreaking set of Guidance for Inclusive AI, offering a concrete roadmap for practitioners across sectors to embed inclusivity into the entire AI lifecycle—from project scoping and dataset selection to development and deployment.

Why This Work Matters for Civil Society and Government

For nonprofits and civil society organizations, inclusive AI isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a matter of mission alignment. These groups often serve communities that are most vulnerable to algorithmic bias and automation-related harm. Yet, many nonprofits lack the technical expertise or influence to shape how AI is built or deployed. The Partnership on AI’s guidance offers them a voice and a framework to advocate for inclusive approaches, ask the right questions, and demand accountability from technology partners. We know AI is here, its imperative for us to advocate for inclusion of our communities and those we serve.

For government entities, especially those responsible for public service delivery, the risks of excluding certain populations from AI-enabled systems are immense. Public agencies must ensure that algorithmic tools uphold civil rights, comply with anti-discrimination laws, and support AI-powered delivery for all.

What’s encouraging is that some governments are beginning to step up. The State of California, for example, recently released its Generative AI Equity Guidelines, one of the most detailed efforts by a public sector body to operationalize equity and inclusion in the context of generative AI. California’s work recognizes that technology is not neutral and that proactive inclusive design is essential.

Few Have Ventured Here—But More Must Follow

Despite growing awareness of algorithmic harm, very few organizations have the tools and guidance to deeply engage with the structural and systemic dimensions of AI bias. Too often, discussions remain at the level of fairness metrics or model tweaks. Our task force's guidance will hopefully shift how we define success, engage impacted communities, and prioritize lived experience alongside technical performance.

The Partnership on AI’s guidance emphasizes:

  • Co-creation with affected communities

  • Inclusive datasets that reflect real-world diversity

  • Power-aware decision-making that interrogates who benefits and who bears the risk

  • Transparency and accountability across the AI pipeline

These principles are not just good practice—they are increasingly essential safeguards for a democratic and just society at time where those norms are being fundamentally tested.

A Call to Action

If you work in nonprofit leadership, community advocacy, public service, or policymaking, this guidance will hopefully serve as a call to engage, with the how-to of the tools and guidance. Even with this guidance, we understand the need for the precious commondoities of political will, resource investment, and shared responsibility to ensure AI serves everyone.

I invite colleagues and partners to explore the Guidance for Inclusive AI and consider how you can integrate these principles into your work. Let’s build an AI-powered future that reflects our highest values—not our deepest inequalities.
